Press Release

Franchitti Urges Fans to be Donors Nashville Superspeedway Steps Up for Blood!

The Nashville Superspeedway is asking race car fans to step up and donate blood. IndyCar® Series driver and Franklin, Tennessee resident Dario Franchitti has joined the call.

“The number of people who need blood everyday is hard to believe,” said Franchitti. “Each day 38,000 units of blood are transfused.  Lives are saved because people make time to donate blood.  I hope everyone eligible will give blood before the summer gets any hotter.”

Franchitti knows physical hardship.  He suffered a back injury in 2003 that postponed his entry into the Indy Racing League® (IRL) IndyCar®  Series, but he has battled his way back to become one of the top drivers in the IRL..  As the winner of the July 2005 IRL race at the Nashville Superspeedway, Franchitti is the proud owner of the Les Paul trophy guitar.  Franchitti showed that guitar during his visit with Sydney, a very young blood recipient who has used blood for several surgeries.  Sydney is growing strong, keeping pace with her triplet brother and sister. Their parents are active donors and make a point of inviting others to donate.

“We have been very blessed by the generosity of our community and strangers,” said Michele Fort.  “Sydney has used blood three times.  Without donors making time to put blood in the hospital we wouldn’t have Sydney with us and that would be a terrible loss.”

The Nashville Superspeedway has again invited the Red Cross to be a part of the racing season.  Each pre-race parade will have a Red Cross Blood Services vehicle in the lineup and each race will have program ads, banners and announcements reminding race fans of the importance of a ready blood supply.

“Race car drivers can train and practice for months and years, but we cannot succeed unless we work together as a team, said Franchitti.  “Hospitals have great doctors and nurses and medicines, but without blood donations, certain surgeries cannot occur.  We hope fans will enjoy the racing season and make time to give blood.”

Franchitti’s picture with Sydney will appear on the postcard reminders and blood drive posters during the Nashville Superspeedway’s season.  Visitors to blood drives are invited to enter to win box seating for the June 10 Federated Auto Parts 300 BUSCH Series race. The winners will enjoy indoor seating, buffet dining, pit passes and a chance to watch the end of the race in the Winner’s Circle.  Ballots will be at all blood drives during the month of May.  Call 1-800 GIVE LIFE for drive locations and dates.

The minimum age to donate blood is 17.  There is no maximum age.  The minimum weight is 110 pounds.  First time donors are invited and encouraged. For more information, please see http://tnvalley.redcross.org.
