HORNISH ANNOUNCES BUSCH SCHEDULE

Penske Racing officials have confirmed that three-time IRL IndyCar Series champion Sam Hornish Jr. is scheduled to compete in 11 NASCAR Busch Series races in the No. 12 Mobil 1 Dodge in 2007, with the first race scheduled to be the season opening Orbitz 300 at Daytona International Speedway on February 17.

Following Daytona, Hornish is slated to race at California Speedway (February 24), Atlanta Motor Speedway (March 17), Nashville Superspeedway (April 7), Richmond International Raceway (May 4), Michigan International Speedway (August 18), Dover International Speedway (September 22), Lowe's Motor Speedway (October 12), Texas Motor Speedway (November 3), Phoenix International Raceway (November 10) and Homestead-Miami Speedway (November 17).

Coming off a successful three day test at Daytona, where he logged 189 laps and came away as the second fastest driver in the draft (187.833 mph on his first day) behind Kyle Busch, Hornish hopes to use these 11 races as education towards his newest goal – running and winning “The Great American Race.”

"It's more for experience and something new . . . to be able to someday come here run the Daytona 500," said the 2006 Indianapolis 500 winner. "That's probably my goal right now. You are not just going to jump in a Cup car and go out there and be able to win. I want to come here for my first time as a rookie for that and somewhat be competitive. I don't want to go home and not make the race. This is part of practice to be able to go out and do that."

"To win a race here, whether a 24-hour race or someday the Daytona 500 - you can't ask for a whole lot more than that,"

While 11 races have been announced, Hornish has admitted that the program may change should it take away from his primary focus, which for next season remains to be the IRL IndyCar Series.

"The reason we’ve kind of held back with what we are going to do is because, as it stands right now, IndyCar is still the thing that we need to continue to maintain our focus on as far as the big picture goes," said the defending series champion. "If we feel at any time like we are taking away from that program, or we’re hurting ourselves as far as that goes, we need to reevaluate where we are at and what the causes are for that, whether it might just be something else or if it’s the fact that I am running around too much and too busy and can’t focus on what I need to do."

This weekend, Hornish will compete with Mark Patterson, Oswaldo Negri and Penske Racing teammate Helio Castroneves in the Rolex 24 At Daytona for Michael Shank Racing.
