Nashville Superspeedway specializes in fast times and hot laps but they came in a different package last weekend.
On Saturday, Sept. 24, Nashville Superspeedway hosted the first Speedway Shootout, a high school cross country meet featuring more than 200 runners from a dozen high schools across Middle Tennessee. The three-mile course wound around Nashville Superspeedway’s expansive campus and provided gorgeous views as runners set personal bests and course records were established.
“Nashville Superspeedway was a great location for our inaugural Speedway Shootout,” said Charlie Simon, the meet coordinator for the Wilson Central High School cross country team. “There were miles of open grassy space, plenty of parking, and the easy access off of I-840 made it very convenient for teams coming from all over Middle Tennessee.
“We had more than 200 runners this year and our goal for next year is more than 1,000. Based on all the positive feedback from the other coaches and parents, I think we are well on our way. We hope to continue this partnership with Nashville Superspeedway for years to come. It is a great venue and together we can grow this into a destination event.”
Father Ryan High School took home first place honors in both the boys’ and girls’ varsity races, while Coffee County placed second in the boys’ event and Wilson Central was second in the girls’ meet.
Since the rebirth of Nashville Superspeedway was announced in 2020, the facility has hosted various regional and national events in addition to its NASCAR slate, with a commitment to bring more programs and offerings to Middle Tennessee’s racing and entertainment jewel.
That schedule continues this weekend with the 2021 ClassicParts.com C10 Nationals on Friday and Saturday. Billed as “America’s Truck Event,” spectators and truck enthusiasts can enjoy a truck show, autocross, burnouts, and more. Admission is $20 per day for fans ages 13 and up, while children under 12 are admitted free. A full list of events is available here.
